Resumen
Puberty is the transition period between childhood and adulthood and endocrinological disturbances play a significant role during this time of life. The changes that take place may often cause concern among adolescents and their parents, leading to their consultation with assorted questions. Abnormalities in growth and pubertal development, as well as variations of normality require a special consideration by the physician. Obesity is a public health problem and metabolic abnormalities linked to insulin resistance (diabetes, dyslipidemia and high blood pressure) may be present in adolescents, hence the relevance in making a prompt diagnosis and treatment of metabolic syndrome. Also, in adolescent females, polycystic ovary syndrome and the clinical manifestations of hyperandrogenism related to insulin resistance are common. This article will review these and other prevalent pediatric pathologies such as type 1 diabetes mellitus and thyroid disorders, emphasizing on their distinctive features during adolescence.
