Síndrome de Grisel: una causa grave de tortícolis

Introduction: Grisel’s syndrome is a nontraumatic atlantoaxial subluxation caused by infections that affect the otolaryngology’s area (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, mastoiditis) or by head and neck surgery. Objectives: To know a severe cause of torticollis that can have fatal consequences. Population under 12 years and Down syndrome are the most affected. Case report: We present a case of 8 year old girl that presented with torticollis after suffering from an afebrile pharyngitis. The patient improved with conservative treatment, first cranial traction and then with a Minerva type cervical collar for 3 months. Conclusion: Grisel’s syndrome must be part of the differential diagnosis in the paediatric population with persistent painful torticollis. A prompt diagnoses and an accurate treatment will avoid severe consequences.
