Abstract

Metro de Madrid is one of the best metro systems in Europe in terms of travel speed, train frequency and safety. Despite this, the travel speed of passengers is limited by the continuous stops needed at the stations. The average driving speed has a measured value of 35.8 ± 3.6 km / h, excluding stopping time. The average driving speed, including stopping times, is 26.1 ± 2.6 km / h. The percentage of time that the train remains stopped can be 27.27% of the total travel time. This article presents a novel personal rapid transport technology, called OPTIMOTUSS, which could multiply the total travel speed by a factor of more than 4 if applied to underground metro networks such as the Metro de Madrid. This innovative technology shows great potential to improve travel times in global metro systems and its implementation cost is relatively low, as the vehicles are compatible with current metro infrastructures.
