Zusammenfassung

Objectives. To evaluate Risky Alcohol Consumption (RAC) in Spanish medical students. Influence of sex and academic stage on RAC is studied. Method. A cross-sectional study was conducted on medical students from 1st to 6th grade, from all over the Spanish territory, who participated voluntarily and anonymously. AUDIT-C, with a cut-off point for RAC of 5 for men and 4 for women, was administered in person to students of a school of medicine. The hyperlink to the questionnaire was subsequently distributed through social networks. Findings. 1336 questionnaires were collected. 28.6% (n = 382) men and 71.4% (n = 954) women. The mean age was 21.7 ± 2.6 years. 44.9% (n = 600) preclinical students and 55.1% (n = 736) clinical students. 46% (n = 614) scored for RAC. There was a higher prevalence of RAC in preclinical stage (p<.05). Significant differences in the pattern of consumption by reason of sex (p<.05) were found, but not in RAC. Conclusions. Prevalence of RAC among Spanish medical students is high. Sex has not been found to influence RAC. Sex significantly affects the patterns of consumption. Preclinical students present a higher prevalence of RAC. Prevention and awareness campaigns are needed from the university administration.
