Abstract

The expressive capacity of paintings and engravings that are included in the general frame of Prehistoric Art has been long debated . One of the most largely accepted readings until the last part of the 20th century is its discontinuity from the end of the Upper Paleolithic Era onwards. As the latest discoveries around the Southwest and the East of Iberia indicate, there probably was no absolute disappearance of the decorated parietal supports. The weight of the past is thus suggested to be an ongoing symbolic reference for farmer groups. The techinque and thematic paleolithic hunters' background shall be confirmed by comparing paleolithic/ postpaleolithic diachronies in regions around southern Europe. The Iberian Peninsula, Italy and France all represent the largest part of the currently documented evidence.
