Abstract

Forest fires are considered one of the most relevant environmental problems. In order to mitigate forest fires impact, it is necessary to know how vegetation recovers through time after the fire. In this sense, remote sensing data are essential to monitor vegetation recovery because is an efficient and cost-effective approach. Nowadays we can use satellite data from a long time series, up to the last forty years, to analyze dynamic processes as forest fires. This paper presents the main methods and data used in remote sensing to monitor forest fire recovery, and we present as study case the SERGISAT research project. This project aims to study vegetation recovery after forest fires that happened in the 90´s, using Landsat data.
