Abstract

Trade agreements are an instrument to promote the trade policy of the European Union. These trade agreements promote trade opportunities and the overcoming of different trade barriers. The trade agreements of the European Union are instruments that guide trade policy and promote the principles and values of European integration globally. This paper analyzes the relevance of the promotion of international free trade by the European Union and its effects in Latin America based on trade agreements. Especially the projection of social clauses in the agreements signed by the European Union is studied, highlighting their references to the guarantee of international labor standards. In this sense, the application of these commercial agreements is reviewed in attention to the effectiveness and guarantee of the social clause. A series of comparative references are made to the clauses contemplated in the trade agreements of the European Union with Latin America and North America, due to their direct impact on the economies of this region. Finally, the study insists on the need to enhance the action of the ILO, in its work to guarantee labor rights and social protection in the administration of trade agreements.
