Abstract

The flipped classroom is becoming a very popular teaching method in the educational context. However, there are currently not enough scientific investigations that make it possible to support the suitability of the flipped classroom as an ideal method for all areas and educational levels. The object of this research was to analyse academic performance and university student satisfaction and perception of the educational experience of the use of the flipped classroom. The study followed a mixed design which assessed the students’ academic performance using quantitative techniques, and their satisfaction and perception of the flipped classroom method, as well as those of their teachers, using qualitative techniques. The total sample was composed of 94 university students. The results reveal that the students obtained better academic results with the flipped classroom than with the traditional method. The students also highlighted that the flipped classroom method made it possible for them to make a better use of their time and achieve better learning. As disadvantages of this method they underlined the investment in time that was necessary to make suitable use of the method and the importance of the quality of the technological resources used. It can be concluded that the flipped classroom method is suitable for the university context as it enhances the acquisition of the contents and motivates the students, but requires adequate technological means.
