Resumo

This article aims to document the evolution of comics studies in the United Kingdom, paying attention to the early attempts to study the medium during the 20th century and, especially, the important developments that have occurred in the first two decades of the 21st century in terms of market positioning in prestigious publishing houses, the emergence of specialised academic journals, as well as the appearance of conferences and events that welcome artists, researchers and fans. The vitality of the new research networks that have emerged from this favourable conjuncture and the gradual incorporation of comic studies in the academic curriculum (either at undergraduate or postgraduate level) offers an encouraging panorama for comics in the country. In the final part of the article, we share some general reflections on the state of the art, drawing on Roger Sabin’s arguments, who has recently been awarded a professorship for his outstanding work in the development of comic studies in the United Kingdom.
