Abstract

Flare-ups/exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are defined as a sudden worsening of respiratory symptoms that require a change in habitual treatment. Exacerbations have a negative impact on patients’ quality of life, accelerate disease progression, and increase risk of death. It is essential to confirm the diagnosis of a COPD exacerbation, ruling out diseases that progress with similar symptoms; evaluate the severity of the flare-up; and decide what the most suitable treatment is. The following protocol shows how to diagnose COPD exacerbations and the differential diagnosis, which additional tests should be performed, and the most suitable treatment according to published guidelines.
