Ischemic stroke is defined as dysfunction in a region of the central nervous system as a consequence of a stoppage in focal perfusion. It can be subdivided into cerebral infarction or transitory ischemic attack (TIA) depending on whether the ischemia lasts long enough to cause tissue necrosis. According to the etiological classification of the Spanish Society of Neurology's Cerebrovascular Disease Study Group, ischemic stroke is subdivided into atherothrombotic stroke, cardioembolic stroke, lacunar stroke, stroke of unusual cause, or stroke of undetermined cause. The secondary prevention strategy is different for each type. Arriving at a correct diagnosis of cerebral infarction is fundamental to being able to provide appropriate treatment in the acute phase and thus revert the symptoms and improve patients’ functional prognosis. In addition, the study of the stroke's cause will lead to an improvement in secondary prevention and must be as comprehensive as possible.
