Abstract

The relationship between the interannual variability of the sea surface temperature across the tropical Atlantic Ocean and that of the precipitation in three areas of interest, namely, the Brazilian Nordeste, the Sahel region and the northern coast of the Gulf of Guinea, is examined in this work. Such connection is revealed by the correlation of indices representing rainfall variability in the said regions with an oceanic one representative of the evolution of the sea surface temperature in the equatorial Atlantic. The origins of the significant correlations among those time series are sought in the structure shown by the sea surface temperature and sea level pressure anomalies across the tropical Atlantic basin. The issue is addressed in both observed and simulated data, so an assessment of the performance of an ’state-of-the-art’ coupled atmosphere-ocean model is also carried out.
