Abstract

One of the three thematic strategies of the new Regulation of the policy of Rural Development 2007-2013 is <<to improve the quality of life in the rural zones and to promote the diversification of the economic activities». The initiatives of this strategy should contribute to the basic priority to create opportunities of employment and good conditions for the growth in rural environments. In the economy of the La Vera area of the Extremadura region of western Spain tourism, craft and recreational activities are growth sectors and offer considerable opportunity outside agriculture for the development of micro-businesses in the rural economy. Fantastic cultural and natural patrimony exists in La Vera which makes it one of the main tourist destinations of Extremadura. Since 2005 this area has implemented a Tourist Encouragement Plan negotiated by the Association of Integral Development of the La Vera Area (ADICOVER). This Plan tries to encourage tourist activity and income generated by this activity in La Vera, consolidating this sector as one of the motors of the economy and local employment.
