Echocardiography is the most extensively used cardiac imaging test, due to its diagnostic yield, low price and lack of radiation. The three-dimensional technology also enables the assessment of the morphology and function of the various cardiac structures in a more understandable and accurate manner, especially in valve disease. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging has enormous diagnostic value for calculating ventricular volumes and function, determining the differential diagnosis of various cardiomyopathies and assessing intracardiac masses. Cardiac computed tomography, applied especially to the diagnosis of coronary artery disease, is undergoing an exponential growth in use, due to its high negative prognostic value for excluding coronary artery disease in patients with chest pain. The analysis of myocardial perfusion through single-photon emission computed tomography is employed for the diagnosis, quantification and localisation of ischaemia and myocardial viability. Lastly, positron emission tomography-computed tomography fusion techniques have recently emerged in the diagnosis of diseases such as infectious endocarditis and tumours with cardiac involvement.
