Abstract

This paper documents, first, the recent evolution of the age structure of employees in Spain. Data from the Labour Force Survey and from administrative registers of firms and employees of the Social Security show that, with some heterogeneity across firms, sectors, occupations, and regions, average age of the employees has been growing very rapidly and will continue to do so in the next years. Using administrative data of employees, we also construct labour earnings profile for population cohorts who retired recently and cohorts who are now approaching retirement ages, that show that earnings decline significantly after 60 years of age. Secondly, using the previous observations, the paper comments on some socioeconomic consequences of ageing of the working population, highlighting in particular, those related to diminished aggregate employment rate and slower productivity growth.
