Abstract

The article provides a detailed analysis of the historical evolution and current state of pneumology in Spain. It highlights the ancient concern for respiratory diseases, from ancient Greece to Roman times, and how figures such as Hippocrates and Galen contributed to the understanding of respiratory problems. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, there were significant advances in the study of human anatomy and physiology, with figures such as Leonardo da Vinci. The advent of tuberculosis and the epidemic in the 19th century led to further research and the founding of organizations for the study and prevention of this disease. The specialty of pneumology began to evolve in the 1950s, and important milestones such as the creation of the American Thoracic Society and the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis stand out. In Spain, pulmonology developed through specialization in the management of tuberculosis. The specialty was officially recognized in 1978, established by a training system for residents MIR system (Medical Intern Resident) focused on a solid foundation in internal medicine and specific skills in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of respiratory diseases. Pulmonology today faces important challenges, such as the prevention of respiratory diseases through educational campaigns and interdisciplinary collaboration between health professionals. The introduction of advanced technologies and personalized treatments is transforming diagnosis and precision medicine for the management of respiratory diseases, shaping the future of this medical specialty, which is in a central position to provide optimal and accessible care for all.
