Laburpena

The differences between Venice and Rome marked European politics during the first years of the 17th century. The Catholic states were to a greater or lesser extent involved in a dispute in which not only spiritual jurisdiction was settled, but also temporal jurisdiction. The Spanish ambassadors in Venice and Rome, Íñigo de Cárdenas and Juan Fernández Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, were privileged witnesses of this struggle, exchanging abundant correspondence in which the political motivations of the contenders, the ambitions of Pope Paul V, the repercussion of the conflict on the rulers and on venetian society, the doubts and hesitations of the Spanish court and the interest of its enemies.
