Abstract
The San Rafael mine, located in the municipality of Cardeña, in the north-east of Córdoba province (Andalusia), worked one of the main lead-zinc deposits in the Zumajo vein. This paper provides a description of its geographical location together with a geological introduction to its place in the granodioritic unit of the Los Pedroches batholith and a brief review of the mining activity taking place there between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. Finally, it focuses on the paragenesis of the deposit, with a detailed description of the mineral species that have appeared, highlighting –apart from the main ores mined (galena and sphalerite)– a number of secondary lead, zinc and copper minerals including cerussite, caledonite, linarite, kasolite and members of the mimetite-pyromorphite series.
