Resum

An increasing number of viruses are being investigated for being used as a therapy against certain types of cancers. To study in this field, we first focus on gathering all the information about the mechanisms of action and the most interesting characteristics of the main oncolytic viruses. Thus, we discuss the role of the immune system because it is the most important aspect for a curative outcome; as being an obstacle to fully exploit this type of therapy. Therefore, we question the efficacy, selectivity and safety of oncolytic viruses based on the results of previous studies. These studies are mostly in premature stages, so we conclude that more research is required to complete all the knowledge about this issue, also highlighting the newest research fields such as armed viruses or carrier stem cells.
