Abstract

Bartonella quintana is a bacteria that causes a disease known as “trench fever”, described since World War I. This bacteria mainly affects people living in unfavo- rable hygienic conditions, being able to cause them trench fever, chronic bacteremia, bacillary angiomatosis and endocarditis. The only known vector for this bacteria is the human body louse (Pediculushumanus variety corporis) that parasitize humans. Also noteworthy, is the existence of other species of Bartonella, such as B. henselae, B. bacilliforme and clarridgeiae, which can also cause diseases in humans. The diagnosis of the diseases caused by these bacterias can be done by serology, molecular biology detection and cultivation. It has been demonstrated sensitivity to a wide spectrum of antibiotics, however the current treatment is not standardized, being different depending on the clinical triggered by the pathogen. There are new lines of research based on the sequencing of the genome of the bacterium that seek to make effective therapeutic targets.
