Abstract

Sexually transmitted viral infections are highly prevalent and represent one of the most important global public health problems. Among the different agents that get transmitted in this way, we focus on the following: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis Virus (HAV, HBV and HCV) and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). Their pathogenic characteristics have made it difficult to implement fast, sensitive and specific techniques for the usual clinical diagnosis. Nowadays, biomolecular techniques have improved this situation, as well as enabling to a relationship with other pathologies as HPV and cancer. There are different diagnostic methodologies implemented: a collection of specific samples, culture and PCR in the case of direct diagnosis; Serology (rapid agglutination test, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or chemiluminescence (CLIA) in the case of indirect diagnosis. The elegibility criteria will vary depending on the characteristics of the virus, the availability of tests and the efficacy of the tests.
