Resumo

Zika virus is an emergent arbovirus of the Flaviviridae family. The recent global propagation of Zika has caused public health concern worldwide. To better understand the reasons for this dissemination we have analyzed its epidemiological and microbiological characteristics in order to understand the clinical manifestations of this microorganism, the specific diagnostic methods, treatment options and prophylaxis. Due to its rapid spread, it is necessary to identify risk groups as well as establish an early diagnosis to stop the propagation and prevent future cases. In addition, the large number of cases of infection by this virus has caused the appearance of clinical characteristics and neurological complications previously unidentified. Although nowadays there is no specific and effective treatment against this virus, preclinical trials are underway to find a vaccine, which is not viable at the moment.
