Resumo

Alzheimer disease is the issue of many research works that try to clarify the etiopathogenesis, evolution, diagnosis and treatment of this illness. Nowadays, after years of investigation, it is possible to affirm that the main characters on the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease are amyloid-β and tau proteins, among other factors. Recent studies maintain that these proteins have certain similarity with prion proteins regarding its behaviour. According to this idea, in this work we explain the main ideas about the parallelism between Alzheimer disease and prionic diseases and also the consideration of Aβ and tau proteins as real prion proteins. In this review we also discuss about the main therapies in the treatment of Alzheimer disease, focussing on the researches based on Aβ and tau proteins as the main therapeutic targets and considering tau protein a very promising field in future researches.
