Doctor by the Universidad de Alcalá with the thesis Aplicación de arquitecturas reconfigurables al diseño de sistemas sensoriales ultrasónicos 2003. Supervised by Dr. Jesús Ureña Ureña, Dr. Jean Pierre Derutin.
Álvaro Hernández holds a Degree in Electronics Eng. from the University of Alcala and PhD in Electronics and Systems, conjoint from the University Blaise Pascal and the University of Alcala (UAH), where currently he enjoys a position of Full Professor in the Electronics Dept. at the UAH. He has been Secretary of the Electronics Dept. from the UAH. Between 2021 and 2023 he was coordinator of the GEINTRA research group in the UAH, with 24 permanent researches and an average of more than 25 scholarships, contracts and PhD students. In the last ten years, he has participated in numerous research projects, 19 with public funding, total funding 900.000€ (3 as IP) and more than 10 with private funding, total funding about 1.100.000€ (1 as IP). The topics addressed during his research cover the areas of mobile robotics, multisensor integration, ultrasonic sensory systems, NILM techniques, implementation of algorithms in hardware, electronic design and FPGA devices, positioning systems, ambient assisted living and electronic and information technologies applied to transport. As results of the research projects, during the last ten years, he has co-authored publications in journals (41 international publications in indexed journals, 25 Q1) and participated in national and international conferences (more than 65 papers). Many developed works have finally provided practical electronic systems, exploited by industry (co-inventor in 6 patents in the last ten years). The recognition of this activity by the Spanish Nat. Comm. for the Evaluation of Research Activity results in the positive evaluation of four consecutive 6-year research periods (1997-2002, 2003-2008, 2009-2014 and 2015-2020) and a transference and innovation period (2004-2011). Since 2013 he has supervised more than 30 final students’ theses in Grades and Masters. He has supervised or co-supervised up to 9 doctoral theses, within a doctoral program with a Quality Mention since 2003, 5 of them with International Doctorate mention and 3 in international co-supervision (Xi’an Technology University (Chine), Univ. de Tounis El Manar (Tunisia) and Univ. de La Plata Argentina]. Two of them obtained the Best Thesis Award in the University of Alcala. Most of the former students are involved in research activities at different universities, institutes and companies around the World.
