Zusammenfassung
The 27 member-states of the European Union (EU) could not function without translators and interpreters. But this fact takes a new dimension if we think about the hundreds of languages spoken today in the EU, partly due to migration inrecent decades. Thus translation and interpretation have become an essential part in our lives, not only in international organizations, summits and conferences, but also in town halls, courts, hospitals and other places where people have access to public services. The EU and member states should establish standards throughout its territory toguarantee the right to translation and interpretation for a fair and equitable treatment. It is our intention to offer the widest possible view of developments this regard in relation to multilingualism and Translating and Interpreting for Public Services and Institutions (TISPI) focusing on three key issues: state of the art, training and research.
