Abstract

This paper tries to give some explanation of the reasons why there is not a higher level of social conflict in Spainwhen unemployment rates are very high and persistent. The approach considers the welfare situation of households and studies the correlation of unemployment and poverty and the structure of the distribution of household income for those households headed by an unemployed. Results indicate a high and increasing correlationbetween household poverty and the unemployment of thehousehold head in the period (1991-94). Unemployment of benefits (UI or SB) amount to 64% of total household income if head is elegible for them. The income of those households whose head is unemployed but is not elegible for benefits is based on other State transfers and transfers from other households.
