Abstract

The concept of early diagnosis is based on the presumption that diagnosing the disease in the early phase improves its prognosis. The clinical characteristics of lung cancer give grounds to believe that in this case it could be effective. A recent study indicates that an annual low dose computed tomography (CT) scan in high risk patients reduces the mortality related to this cancer. The cost-effectiveness of the early diagnosis of lung cancer is difficult to evaluate, but it is taken into account increasing more by the health care authorities.
