There are demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system other than multiple sclerosis. The diagnostic criteria help to reach an early diagnosis of the various diseases; however, the differential diagnosis is broad. We therefore need to understand the atypical characteristics (red flags) of each disease to perform a correct diagnosis and offer appropriate therapeutic measures. The advances in neuroimaging and laboratory techniques are helping characterize and differentiate the various types of diseases. In this update, we review the most important aspects of each disease.
