Resumo

Land-based livestock systems in Spain have been a main activity historically. Local breeds have used local resources linked to traditional production systems. Due to that, they have an important role shaping and managing landscapes, adding both natural and cultural value, as in the case of permanent grasslands, sylvopastoral systems or drover roads. Currently, the Official Catalogue of Spanish Local Breed recognizes 160 breeds, of which 131 are considered to be in danger of extinction. This paper presents a literature review that contextualizes the importance of the Local Livestock Breeds and their conservation, from an ecological perspective, compatible with nature conservation and landscape cultural values.
