Abstract

Yeísmo is studied in its dimension of pan‐Hispanic linguistic change, raising the need for a coordinated methodology that allows the comparability of its evolution in the different regions of the geography of Spanish. The absence of methodological unity leads to reflect on the difficulties of understanding the direction of the process from a global perspective. From this approach, we illustrate through the analyses carried out in the cities of Madrid and Malaga (Spain), within the framework of the “Project for the Sociolinguistic Study of Spanish in Spain and America” (PRESEEA), the perspectives on which the application of a comparative methodology can shed light. Innovation oscillates between two poles: the dialect and the standard variety, generating new solutions that configure regiolects. At the same time, the leveling dynamics of the dialect are superimposed on the situations of varieties in contact resulting from migratory movements.
