Abstract

This paper presents the results of a corpora study of the use of PHVs in the introductions of doctoral theses written by University of Alcalá students compared with theses of US doctoral students using as a basis the methodology of Liu (2012, 2018), and Alangari et al. (2020) to contrast the frequency and type of the most common PHVs in academic publications, and determine whether PHVs are widely used or otherwise avoided. Our initial hypothesis was that Spanish PhD students would use fewer PHVs in their English theses than their Anglo-Saxon equivalents, however, the former used PHVs twice as much as the latter. We conclude our study by suggesting more corpus-based analysis of PHVs in academic writing.
