Abstract
This paper analyzes the determinaning factors underlying the three key decisions envolved in setting up a new business: the choice of location, the timing and the sector of activity. The results of a specific survey of 507 Spanish entrepreneurs indicate that the vast majority did not follow rules of optimization to create their companies, but simply satisfied some specific thresholds, basing their decisions mainly on their various personal circumstances. The degree of optimization in the setting up of a business seems to determine long-term profitability. Those entrepreneurs who were not subject to any kind of restriction and were able to optimize their entry decision enjoyed higher levels of profitability.
