Abstract

The lichen microalgae cannot actively regulate their water content, which depends on the environmental humidity. For this reason, they are poikilohydric organisms. The majority of these algae are tolerant to desiccation. Our study focused on the physical and biochemical changes of the cell wall of two algae adapted to environments with different humidity and exposed to cyclic dessication/rehydration (D/R). ESEM images were taken to visualize the deformation of the cell wall and their main polysaccharides were analyzed by liquid chromatography. Our results suggest that cyclic D/R induces an increase in cell wall flexibility, playing an important role in the survival of these organisms.
